The Supreme Court today directed the CBI to file the certified copy of the Portugal Supreme Court judgement cancelling the extradition of mafia-don Abu Salem to India.

A bench comprising Justices P Sathasivam and J Chelameswar issued the directions when the apex court found that the certified copy of the judgement was not on record.

Meanwhile, in a major setback to Salem, who is facing trial in 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast case, the Constitutional Court of Portugal has stayed the hearing of his application seeking directions to drop the criminal proceedings against him in the case.

Salem along with Monica Bedi was extradited to India after having been caught by the Portuguese authorities in 2005.

The Portugal court had ordered his extradition to India following the assurance given by the CBI that he would neither be given death penalty nor sentenced to more than 25 years of imprisonment.
